This will be my introduction into the works of MA Bennett, but S.T.A.G.S has recently gone on my TBR pile. I have noticed that she is able to create a wonderful cover, with an intriguing tag line, and I have to admit that this is what initially interested me about this book. The blurb, however, does not make this book sound like my typical read, depending on where the author places their focus.

My initial impressions of the first look were that I liked the way that the titles were presented, with Desert Island Disks being the centre-point. However, before we get into that, the prologue provides a quick introduction to the situation in which Link finds himself, and which I assume will be the main plot point of the story. My issue is that I am currently unsure about Link as a narrator, mainly due to the inconsistencies in language (using stereotypical phrases at random), as well as him reacting in a way that doesn’t make sense to me regarding the potential deaths of the other characters in the story.

As we move through the story, I am starting to develop some sympathy towards Link, however, I am not convinced about his narration, finding it to be difficult to get into. The characters seem at this point to be fairly stereotypical, but there is certainly room for development baring in mind that this is only a few pages of the book. The scene with the running around the square was well thought out and written really well with suitable tension even though we knew the outcome before going into it.

Although not immediately captivating, this book has a lot of potential and I would be interested to see how the character arcs develop over the course of this story, as we know that Link’s immediate assumption that he is the only survivor is incorrect. I would also be interested to see how they get out of this situation, and whether our characters’ behaviour changes following the stay on the island.
