I really enjoyed STAGS and aside from the movie references which got a bit top heavy and flew over my head, it made for a smart and quirky piece of YA fiction. The premise of The Island seems much more derivative because as far as I am aware there have already been numerous rehashes of Lord of the Flies (The Hunger Games for starters).

I did not particularly warm to Lincoln who clearly thinks he is super smart in a geeky way and on the evidence of the movie and music jokes present, my overriding thought was that the author hasn’t moved on very much from STAGS. It all smacks of “same old” and I struggled to read the entire First Impression. Uninspiring opening and more of M.A. Bennett’s film trivia.. yawn!
