A brilliant opening to an historical novel set in the fourteenth century - I was completely gripped and cannot wait for more. The early signs of what we now know as the black death are clear, but not to the contemporary characters for whom this is an unknown plague. Naturally most of the gentry are more concerned with the important economic matter of a possible marriage to join two adjacent properties - romance may exist for some but it was far from being the norm when nobles owned serfs, fathers owned children and husbands owned wives.
I would love to read more and find out what happens - I have high hopes for a possible sub-plot concerning the unknown father of the serf Thaddeus.
