I picked up 'The Last Hours' when I saw it in my local charity shop thanks to its gorgeous cover and the fact that Kate Mosse, whose books I love, praised it highly. It was also largely about the infamous Black Death, which I was interested to see represented - it is a massive part of medieval British history, and even now the fact that it killed almost a third of the population of the UK at the time leaves people hoping such a pandemic never happens again.

'The Last Hours' is strongest in two places: the worldbuilding and the characterisation. 1348 England is crafted wonderfully by Walters, with great historical accuracy. Lady Anne of Develish, the heroine, is a wonderful character. Educated by nuns and very much a modern woman, her opinions and views are wonderful to read and I liked seeing how she formed her opinions about where to go next to prevent the spreading of disease.

The plot was structured well, reaching a pleasant conclusion that I enjoyed. If the rest of Walters' books are just as enjoyable and well-written, I look forward to reading them.
