I have long been a fan of Minette Walters, who is well known for her psychological suspense dramas and is now exploring a new genre for her :- Historical Sagas.
The Last Hours is set in the fourteenth century during the onset of the Black Death. The heroine, Lady Anne tries to save her serfs by keeping them segregated from external contact with other people. Her convent education and knowledge of medical matters and hygiene helps to protect her people.

The plot has many interwoven strands including not only the Black Death and murder but also explores the inconsequence of wives and daughters to powerful men.

This is a well rounded novel introducing many characters and setting the scene for future books in the series. Perhaps not her best but I still look forward to reading the next instalment.
