Our story opens with a tragedy, a young woman expected at a party is found dead on the beach. It is a suicide.

Because we are dealing with a community of social climbers in America (think the Hamptons) then suddenly everyone leaves for the winter and only the girls best friend is left to pick up the pieces.

Our narrator isn't rich, she isn't privileged, she has to work for a living. She works for the dead girls family and was her best friend.

The following summer, just as everything has settled to normality, the well-to-do families return and someone isn't prepared to let sleeping dogs lie.

Readers of similar books may be able to guess some of the twists and turns as our characters get reacquainted but this is a well written novel and I for one was happy to go along for the ride.
