This book started off so well. It was very atmospheric – you could really feel the isolation of Littleport during the winter and the author conveyed a real sense of the tensions between the locals and visitors.

However, once Avery starts to investigate Sadie’s death there a number of huge plot holes where we, as the readers, are just expected suspend disbelief.

Without revealing any spoilers, the worst one was what Avery found on the island. Why would such a thing be there and how did she just happen to feel around under that particular place? There were others too – with the phone and the shoes.

I also guessed the ‘plot twist’ early on so, for me, this wasn’t a particularly strong example of this genre.
