The Last house Guest is a thriller set in Littleport, a small town in Maine. The dual time line takes the reader between the present day and the events of the past, drip feeding information about the background of people connected to the two central characters, Avery Green and Sadie Loman.
It took me a little while to get into the story, as I needed to get to know the characters a little in order to care what had happened to Sadie on the night of the party. I liked the novel's exploration of class difference and the position of the 'outsider', and felt it gave real insight into the secrets hidden under the surface of life in a small town. I'm quite good at guessing final twists but was genuinely surprised by the ending here - always a good sign!
