The story opens with Mizuki (in 2018) reminiscing about her grandfather. It then moves on to the heartbreaking recollection of her grandfather’s experience on the day that an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. I was completely emotionally connected to the characters and immersed in the story.

This story is not only beautifully presented but beautifully written as well. The moment I opened the book, I knew it was going to be something special. The beautiful illustrations and crisp white pages all add to the experience; and make no mistake this is an experience, no a journey, that will stay with you for a very long time.

It’s very rare that I find a book truly ‘unputdownable’ but this book is a work of art, a heart-wrenching story; a story of hope in a world that definitely lacks hope, particularly at the moment. Definitely a top read recommendation!
