The story is so heartbreaking, it’s so hard to even try and imagine what it must have been like in Hiroshima in 1945.

Ichiro is a teenage boy at the time of the atomic bomb. Although a fictional story, you can very well imagine what is written within the pages happening in Hiroshima. This is a true story of survival and hope and how you should never give up. Ichiro although only a teenager does everything he can to survive.

The story is written in two formats, there are sections of free verse within the novel which I am a big fan of, it really adds to the experience of reading such a traumatic and thought provoking story.

What I loved was the authors note at the beginning of the book. She explains that she is not Japanese and has not lived through such an atrocity. She states that she couldn’t let this story go, her level of detail in her research is amazing.

This is a book that can easily be devoured in one sitting and I think needs to be read in one sitting so if you are going to pick it up bear that in mind.
