This book is unlike any I have read before. It follows the story of an ageing Ichiro as he shares his memories of the Hiroshima bombing and it’s aftermath with his granddaughter, Mizuki. Powerful and written with sensitivity the author gently weaves her tale, with respect for both the harrowing subject matter and the guilt that Ichiro feels at not having fulfilled the promise that he made on that fateful day.

The text is beautifully written, with poetry and prose working seamlessly together to captivate the reader and simple, yet breathtaking, drawings adding perfectly to the emotive story. Hidden away at the back of the book is a sheet of origami paper and instructions so you can make your very own paper crane - a fittingly beautiful note to end on.

I have no doubt that this book will leave a lasting impression on those who read it and would be perfect to read and discuss as part of a book club.
