A beautiful and very moving story about the devastating effects of the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

It follows the story of Mizuki’s grandfather who survived the bomb and the guilt he felt in having done so and towards those he lost and felt he had let down. The story is told in two timelines; one on the day the bomb is dropped and the weeks and months thereafter and the other in the current day.

There is a wonderful simplicity in the way the story is told. The author uses free verse to tell much of the story and I found that this added to the atmosphere of the story. I could not put the book down and by the time I had finished reading tears were running freely down my face (and I am not someone who cries easily).
