It seems wrong to say that a tale about such a harrowing event is beautiful but that is exactly what this book is. Beautifully written and illustrated it recounts the life of guilt and regret lived by Ichiro, a survivor of Hiroshima. Details of the day the bomb dropped are depicted and we learn of the horrors that unfolded. Growing up, I was taught that this act of war was necessary to save the world. Reading this book made me rethink everything I had been led to believe. The pain and suffering inflicted on innocent civilians, small children included, is hard to comprehend. Small details, such as the pattern of Hiro’s shirt being burnt into his flesh, will stay with me for a long time. The chaos experienced in the aftermath is described so well it is like being there.
I loved this story and felt a huge level of empathy for the characters in it. It’s an easy read about a very hard subject. Thoroughly recommend.
