This book is such a beautiful book on the inside and outside with beautiful illustrations. It is a really emotional read and did bring a tear to my eye.
It tells the story of Ichiro as a teenager as he lives through the bombing of Hiroshima and his journey to save his friend Hiro’s 5 year old sister Keiko. Unfortunately due to the chaos that ensues the blast Ichiro is not able to keep his promise to look after Hiro’s sister. Seventy years later Ichiro is still living with the guilt of not being able to keep his promise to his friend.
This book is written in verse and in haiku poems and it just flows beautifully. I am now torn with this book between lending it to everyone I possibly can and holding is so close. I really think this book is so relevant for today as it reminds us about what is important in life and would be perfect on any school English curriculum.
