I could not put this book down! The story follows Ichiro as he tells his granddaughter about the days after the atomic bomb is dropped on Hiroshima and the promise he has failed to keep.

The illustrations are beautiful and add to the symbolism that is weaved throughout this novel. Initially the short verse-like prose, used to denote the present, is a little difficult to adjust to. However it is used to great effect towards the end to hold the suspense and add a poignancy to the ending.

The past is written in standard prose. The author is very descriptive and includes even the smallest details that helps the reader build an image of this post apocalyptic city. The guilt that Ichiro feels at not having fulfilled his promise is keenly felt throughout and there are some lovely moral messages built around this. Definitely worth the read!
