The Last Paper Crane tells the story of Ichiro, and the memories that have haunted him since surviving the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. Years later, he still cannot let go of the guilt of a broken promise, and he recounts the story of his youth in present day to his granddaughter.

With beautiful illustrations, and written in a mixture of verse and prose, this story is equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful.

The downside is that I felt the present day portions, which were told in verse, lacked depth because of the format they were written in. I would have liked more from the ending, as the whole story had been building up to that moment, but it fell a little flat for me. Overall, this was a very quick read that had me thinking a lot deeper about the events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
