I love the way this book is written, and the illustrations provide a further sense of depth that conveys an event which is difficult to imagine let alone describe. I also thought that the sheet of origami paper enclosed at the back of the book and the instructions on how to make your own paper crane were a really nice touch and brought about a little more reality and feeling of sharing. The book itself centres on Mizuki and her grandfather and moves between the events of the Hiroshima bombing in 1945 and present-day Japan. Some of the chapters are descriptive pros and others are made of short, snappy, language in a poetic style. I think this adds to the flow of the book and it led me along at quite a pace, but also left room for me to sit and ponder in further depth about the feelings encased beneath the surface of the book. A very recommend read.
