This book is beautiful both in words and illustrations and like no other book you will have read. It is the heart wrenching story of promise and written both in verse and prose.
Through the teenage eyes of Ichiro Ando we experience the horrors of the bomb hitting Hiroshima. He doesn't know what has happened to his home, family and friends but has a determination throughout to honor a promise to his friend and protect his 5yr old sister.
Although this book is graphic, it is not detailed and horrific and the story of Ichiros granddaughter written in prose is a nice variation. The prose continues the story with an ease and flow and keeps you guessing throughout.
I could not put this book down and read it in 1 sitting and the illustrations added to the beauty of this book.
The Last Paper Crane is sublime and will stay in my thoughts for a long time.
