Swift, pacey beautiful start. The language and phrases twist and turn like the grief it describes.

This is a lovely book, full of love, hope, patience and heartbreak. Set in the present day and 1945, this is a tale of that fateful day when the atomic bomb hit Hiroshima and destroyed so many people’s lives in an instant. The novel follows 2 young boys and a little girl as they try to find help. 1945 and the bomb is described with solid prose, while the reflection of the past from the privilege of the future is Poetic and flows all over the page like the grief it describes.

The juxtaposition of the poetic start and reflection of the young protagonist on their grandfather’s struggles with the prose of the grandfather in younger times is super and unique. The illustrations are dark and evocative of the horrors the book describes.

Looking back and through the poetry we are able to find hope in a dark situation and that time can and does heal.
