This absolutely broke my heart and I was a jibbering wreck by the end of it.
Mizuki's grandfather is depressed and when he talks to her she learns of his past and life during wartime and that tragic day Hiroshima dropped and changed peoples lives forever.
Ichiro has always felt guilty and feels he failed his best friend Hiro and his little sister Keiko.
After being forced to leave the city he makes a vow to always search for Keiko as he feels she was his responsibility.
He leaves paper cranes as messages all over Japan hoping she will see one and they will be reunited and know that she didn't die after Hiroshima.
This was one of the most amazing books I have read this year, powerful, moving and tragic as to the brutality of war and how it affects the lives of ordinary people.
