I find it really hard to put into words how beautiful this book is. Not only does is use haiku style prose to tell the modern day story, in comparison to regular styles for the past, there are also wonderful illustrations and the added beauty of a paper crane to fold at the very back.

The Last Paper Crane is a short story which manages to capture disaster, tragedy, struggle, hope and love so effectively and without unnecessary detail. When the atomic bomb hits Hiroshima 1945, Ichiro and Hiro are best friends badly injured and desperately searching for Hiro's little sister Keiko. Ichiro describes the pain and challenges they encounter to his concerned granddaughter; and the haunting regret he suffers until the present day, over leaving Keiko behind.

A very real experience for many which has been skilfully brought to life; an eye opening and insightful piece of historical fiction that's a 'must read'.
