I absolutely loved this book and read it in one sitting.

It tells the simple but harrowing story of Ichiro Ando and the fateful day in 1945 when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.

It tells of the guilt he felt for more than 40 years at surviving and not being able to help his friend Hiro and his friend's sister Keiko.

The part of the book set in modern Japan was written in poetry and the part set in 1945 was written in prose which I though was a beautifully creative way of separating the two stories. The poetry was interspersed with haikus and the narrative by illustrations.

The story was so moving, and brought a tear to my eye at the wasted lives, and Ichiro's life wasted on guilt and regret. An absolutely wonderful book.
