The setting of this book is a Swedish village and right from the beginning the sense of darkness pervades...the cold, harshness of the countryside with the pine forests & the marshes and the characters who all have their own secrets to hide. There is a real sense of sadness that each of the main characters is a product of the difficult lives their parents have led & the lasting legacy this has resulted in. I was left with the hope that people are able to shed what appears to be a sad existence because of circumstance, and make a decision to change their lives for the better with their own determination to strike out. I was also struck by how our children can help to make changes to our lives even when things seem hopeless.

Liv's story from her early life entwines with that of the present day and we learn the reasons why she is unable to leave the life that makes her existence so miserable. There are many suspicious characters in this novel with different stories being revealed which make it difficult to be sure who is `guilty' & who isn't.

A great read if Scandi Noir modern crime thrillers are your thing!
