This has all the hallmarks of a classic "Scandi Noir" thriller - the sparse, barren, cold landscapes - but is not your traditional cop based murder tale.
Yes there is a murder but that almost seems incidental to the tale for the vast majority of the book.
Old man Vidar has been shot but, whilst the killer is unmasked at the end, this is more the story of his relationship with his daughter Liv.
She still lives at home with him, and her son Simon, but why? It's clear she despises him and has spent half her life trying to escape him and the claustrophobic village they live in. So what possesses her to stay?
Bit by bit her life is peeled away like the layers of an onion.
Meanwhile the book also explores the relationship between brothers Liam and Gabriel. They're the local drugs but one wants to change. Can he escape the influence of his brother?
This is as much a novel about dysfunctional families as it is about murder. Ultimately though is it just a case that one must lead to the other?
A cracking read.
