A grandfather, his daughter and her son all living in a relatively isolated village in Lapland. But with secrets swirling around them like the spring winds coming to banish the winter. Violence, money squabbles, relationship issues and gossip all feature heavily.
For the most part the main attention of the narrative is based on Liv the daughter both past and present. Seemingly caught and perhaps trapped by her father into living a simple life. Its an emotional journey and reads very well. For myself however the most interesting character is Liam a small time crook bullied by his brother. His need to want to escape his downward spiralling life and where that takes him.
There are plenty of twists and turns and everytime you think the story simplifies a little too much with focus on the characters rather than the plot a new twist or curve ball comes along. I was left wanting slightly more perhaps in places (hence the 4 rather than 5 star) but perhaps this was just a hangover of the haunting isolation and atmosphere both in terms of place and characters.
