This is not a book that I would normally choose, but I was intrigued by the remote, Swedish forest setting and I read to the end; the story kept me interested. I was hooked by the account of the bleak, sometimes harrowing lives of the central characters and really wanted to know the answer to Simon's paternity. Was it the awful scenario hinted at. Throughout the book I enjoyed the complex personalities and relationships between the family, especially Liv. I ended up willing a better life for her.
I liked the way the plot centred firmly around Vidar's murder, but twisted back and forth around possible culprits, each time leading me to think I'd definitely cracked it. The eventual reveal was a surprise.
Overall this is a dark, wintry story. It took me into a completely different world. It was good to visit, but I finished the book with some relief to leave- hoping Liv and Simon found their way out too.
