This is a dark and atmospheric story about long held grudges and family ties set in the small semi abandoned Swedish village of Ödesmark. The Björnlund family keep themselves to themselves and are a mystery to their neighbours, the domineering patriarch Vidar is rumoured to be very rich but lives like a pauper and no one can understand why his daughter Liv still lives with him along with her teenage son whose parentage is a mystery. When a face from Vidar and Liv’s past decides to seek revenge by encouraging two dropout local brothers to rob Vidar events take an unexpected turn.
I found the main characters to be quite complex, Vidar with his control and sense of entitlement who cannot get over the loss of his wife when Liv was a baby, Liv with her teenage desperation to escape her father yet never doing so. There are some good themes in here with some strong parallels and although a slow paced story the atmosphere keeps you gripped.
