Mediocre Story

I've been wanting to read more books in translation as well as more Scandinavian novels, so I thought this would be a perfect blend. I was expecting this to be a Scandinavian noir novel with a lot of mystery and intrigue, but unfortunately I found myself really disappointed.

The best part about this book is how atmospheric it is. I could feel the cold of the Swedish winter and the countryside. I could see how remote and secluded their town was and it was really well-written. However, that's where the positives stop. Not only was this book really dull, the characters are either so unlikeable or unremarkable that you never connect with any of them and you never care about what happens to them.

The book is excruciatingly dull and even when the actual mystery starts to happen, it's slow and meandering and the final reveal is a big "who cares?". I really wished I connected with this novel more than I did, but it just wasn't for me.
