'The Last Snow' by Stina Jackson and translated by Susan Beard is a great read for this time of year. I've just come in, and it's freezing outside - a reminder of the icy landscape of this novel - thank goodness my world is not as dark as the world within the pages of this book!
What I enjoyed, and often find with similar icy Swedish settings, was the descriptions of the landscape. I find this additional atmosphere really builds the drama and tension of such thriller reads.
This is a dark book, the subject matter stems around bad blood, small town gossip and hatred. The drama builds from the opening in intensity and becomes a gripping element to follow.
The dark characters range from abusing, controlling, manipulating and we watch our central protagonist Liv deal with the men connected to her life.
The narrative is fairly slow, but I enjoyed this - my review sounds dark, but there's themes of love and hope to balance. A decent Nordic Noir.
