It isn't very often that I write a review before finishing a book, but I am really struggling with is. I fear I am alone with this negative review as so many people have rated it so highly. However, it just was not for me and I genuinely thought I would love it after reading the blurb and the first impression.
The first few pages were great! The girl with the truck driver, that mystery surrounding them was great. However, I just found that there were too much flicking here and there and nothing actually happening. The story just trundles along. I am forcing myself to read it because I can't bear the idea of not finishing the book.
I can't connect with any of the characters either, I am not sure if that is the translation that perhaps stops the connection or if it is the differences in culture. I find the relationship between Liv and her son disturbing - she knows nothing about her son, they are not close, yet she adores him. I am hoping that there is going to be a twist towards the end of the book that perhaps explains this bizarre relationship. *Update - finished the book and I had predicted the ending. There was no bizarre twist with regards the relationship between Liv and her son.
I struggle with the relationship she has with her father too, I know she dislikes him and I can guess why, but it doesn't really tell you much about this and I find this a bit boring to be honest. *Update - I have now finished the book and still find this relationship baffling - I can't make up my mind if she was ever raped by her Father when he was drunk. I find it so strange that she stayed living there when she had several opportunities to flee.
I read a few of the reviews where people feel they really get the atmospheric feel for the setting. Again, I have missed that and don't feel any connection to the surroundings.
It is so disappointing to read a book and not enjoy it but this one just is not for me. I am determined to get to the end but I am struggling to pick it up whenever I put it down as I am just finding it incredibly boring.
