I hate to admit it, but I have never read a book before which has been translated from another language into English. I think I’ve had this idea that it wouldn’t flow somehow, that the story wouldn’t come across as well.
I was wrong, certainly with The Last Snow. The cover is beautiful, with the tag line “In a small Lapland village, no misdeed is ever forgotten...”
Liv Bjornlund lives in Odesmark, a small Swedish village, with her teenage son Simon and her domineering father Vidar.
It is rumoured in the village that Vidar is a millionaire, money made by selling land at a profit and against the wishes of the other villagers.
I can’t really say any more about the story without spoilers, so what I will say is this is one of the best books I have read in a very long time. The scene setting is incredible, descriptive without being overlong, and the characters are fully formed within a short time.
The story itself moves along at a perfect pace, the twist and twist again towards the end are beautifully plotted, just breathtaking.
I thoroughly recommend this book, as always my sincere thanks to Readers First and to Corvus Books for letting me have a copy of this book in return for my honest review.
