I started reading this book purely in order to write my review. I don’t normally choose to read fairy tales, science fiction or fantasy. The Last Storyteller is a mixture of all three but I really enjoyed it.
It tells of the end of planet Earth in the year 2061. A Mexican teenager and her family are selected to escape destruction and travel to a remote planet, Sagan, on board one of the last spaceships to leave Earth. Due to a malfunction in her reprogramming equipment, Petra, arrives four hundred years later, renamed as Zeta-1, with her memories intact but her family lost to her. The spaceship is ruled by the Collective. She recalls the stories her Mexican grandmother used to tell her and tells these to her fellow travellers in secret. The stories have lessons and meaning for everyone about love and caring for the environment. There is quite a lot of Spanish in this book and I think it would have been even more enjoyable if I’d been able to understand it!
