The last storyteller is about the end of human life on planet earth when a comet crashes into the planet.
Prior to this the powers that be select an elite few consisting of politicians, scientists and their families to leave earth and recolonize elsewhere.
It will take 100s of years to get to their destination, during this time passengers will be asleep, and software used to teach them appropriate skills to ensure the continuation of the species.
Without spoiling the plot I enjoyed this book. We follow Petra, who joins with her brother and scientist parents. She wants to be a storyteller and take after her grandmother who remains on earth and examples of her grandmother's stories guide us through the story.
Needless to say all does not go to plan and we follow Petra as she tried to navigate a new reality, alone and uncertain.

I really enjoyed this book which seemed tailored to quite a young audience but kept me engaged. The descriptions of the new planet were beautiful and I would have liked to read more of this. My criticism is that this felt more like the first book in a trilogy rather than a novel to itself. It feels like there is so much further that the author could have taken this and that things had only just begun when we ended.
