Petra Peña lives with her mother, father and younger brother, Javier. One of her favourite pastimes is to sit with her Grandmother, Lita and listen to one of her many stories.
We meet Petra as she is with Lita, having a farewell story - the opening chapter of the book explains that Earth's days are numbered with Halley's Comet on a collision course with the planet.
We learn that Petra, her parents and brother are amongst the few people who have been chosen to journey to a far away planet and start a new life there - the journey will take many lifetimes, so the chosen are placed in a statis for the duration of the trip.
Hundreds of years later Petra is woken from her statis to find that all is not as was expected as the 'interstellar colonisation ship' arrives at the new planet, Sagan. As she said goodbye to her grandmother, Petra promised Lita that she would keep her stories with her, and make her proud - now she must try to make good that promise.
This is a wonderful book, a great read with a real sci-fi alternative/bleak future vibe.
