The Last Storyteller is intended for young adults but it's a fascinating story for all ages. The central character is Petra Pena who leaves Eart with her parents and brother for Sagan, a distant planet, when a comet is on course to destroy Earth. Petra is heartbroken at leaving her much loved grandmother behind and her grandmother tells her a cuento (story) nad tells Petra that she will be a great storyteller. Petra is also very apprehensive as the passengers will be placed into a state of suspended animation for more than two hundred years. The passengers will be cared for by monitors who will live, take partners and die during the journey. The scheme doesn't go to plan and Petra needs all her wits about her, and her storytelling skills, to find a way forward. There is a great deal of sadness and some very dark moments so, although the book is recommended for ten to fourteen year old children I would recommend parental discretion as some ten and eleven year olds might find some parts upsetting however the overall message that Donna Barba Higuera conveys is one of optimism and hope.
