Captivating
This book drew me in very quickly. Petra was immediately appealing as a main character and her love of stories and family really resonated with me. I wasn't sure, as we started, where things were going as there was a sense that a lot was going to happen but it's not a very long book. In a way a lot of the details were skimmed over. The plot could very easily have been written in an eight-book epic but given that its target audience is children I understand why they didn't do this.
The second half of the book (without giving too many spoilers) required a real mindset shift. A lot of the heavy emotional moments were skipped over and not satisfactorily resolved. However, there was a definite sense of forward movement and drive in the plot.
I would recommend this book to children in the 8-12 range. I wouldn't recommend it to adults as it definitely felt slightly watered down and wasn't the most satisfying book to read.
