The book starts off with the chosen few from Earth heading towards a ship which will take them thousands of years into the future to escape the bad things that people on Earth have done.
The main character Petra leaves with her younger brother and parents who are both scientists to set up life on a new planet. They are placed in stat-is for the long journey and when they finally arrive only Petra appears to still be alive although brainwashed and known as Zeta-1. She has been controlled by the Collective who make her decisions for her, feed her strange potions and discard other members when they are no longer useful.
Petra begins to remember events from her time on Earth in particular the stories that her grandmother had told her. She recites these stories to the other Zetas and then comes up with an escape plan to move directly to the planet and get away taking the other Zetas and hoping to find the first arrivers.
