The book starts in the future where mankind can no longer stay on earth and are due to leave for another planet. The main character is worried about leaving her grandmother and her stories behind. From the start the book is quite emotional and I feel tries to spread positive messages. After this promising start I feel the book takes a darker and somewhat upsetting turn that wasn't expected. At around the midway point I lost the excitement of where I thought the author was going to take the storyline. It literally loses the initial main characters and the efforts made to give them a backstory. The new characters don't feel like they have enough depth to them and I felt unable to attach myself to them and their feelings at all. This felt like a massive shame and made the story feel disjointed. I understand this might be a personal perspective.
