I loved the opening to this book, and have added it to my wishlist as a result.
The opening to the book is already incredibly interesting, with the sci fi elements of humans travelling to a new planet (aptly named 'Sagan' after Carl Sagan) as the survival of Earth is threatened.
This in itself will resonate with a lot of readers, given the climate crises and the energy crisis that are going on at the moment across the globe.

The things I liked most about the opening include some of the more subtle messages, including the important of stories, but also the importance of identity.
No matter what wr inhabit from our relatives and ancestors we have to make it our own.

I felt for Petra, who is old enough to recognise the seriousness of the situation, and to feel all the responsibility that comes with it. As much as it is an amazing opportunity for her to survive, she has survivor's guilt, and is desperately clinging to memories of her grandmother in an effort to not forget, and to carry her legacy into the future.

Petra's efforts to commit life on Earth to her memory - all the variations of colour in the sky, the different weather, the smell of the air - do reiterate these things of beauty that we take for granted every day, and they made me consider what I would miss most if we had to leave this big blue marble we call home.

The ending of this extract really hooked me in to wanting to find out more. Will Petra get her stories? Will she be safe in her 'sleep' state? Has something gone wrong?
