This starts as a tale of hope, a small group of settlers leaving earth on space ships to escape its destruction. They will be guided on their way by monitors, who will live their lives on the ships so that those selected to sleep for hundreds of years, absorbing knowledge as they go, can wake to build a new world. It’s an intriguing start to a story.

We meet Petra, our teenage central character, bright, engaging and a born storyteller as she and her family rush to board the ship, her head full of stories and her heart already missing her Lita (grandmother) and the home she is leaving behind.

All does not go to plan and Petra wakes to a terrifying reality not at all like the one she was expecting.

I really enjoyed this book, the sense of home and belonging built by stories and the memories they hold. The focus on the importance of our cultures and histories and how this fits in a dystopian future.
