The book focuses on the inheritance of the estate of Jonathan Coultar after his early death from motor neurone disease. Things are complicated by the very different natures of his three adult children, his ex-wife and his live-in partner, the latter of whom nursed him through his illness.

The author dealt with the many intertwining family dynamics in an interesting way and I thought that the characters, and the complicated relationships between them, were well thought out. The author also managed to avoid too much stereotyping, which is a challenge with a family drama storyline, and added a few surprises along the way.

I found the book very easy to read and struggled to put it down until I had finished. The book gave you food for thought, which I always think is a measure of a good piece of fiction. An interesting read and, despite the subject, not too depressing.
