I received a free copy of this book from Readers First in exchange for an honest review.
I don’t know what I was expecting after reading a sneak preview of this book but the final product wasn’t this! I don’t mean that to sound negative – I just mean that the book actually took me quite by surprise. This book catalogues the aftermath of a death in the family which have become estranged by divorce and petty childhood differences and how they must come together to jointly work out how to divide the estate or else it all goes to charity – certainly an intriguing plot twist. I had visions of lots of squabbles and dirty under-hand dealings but this book was much more artfully designed then that.
I feel that through her well-developed characters, that all come across as easily believable, Caroline Bond has captured on paper all the complexities of interrelationships within families like this and she beautifully portrays all the complex emotions that bubble up as the story unfolds. I had not read any of her work prior to this book but I shall certainly look out for more of her work in the future – her writing style is intellectual, thought-provoking and at all times captivating. I find that she has a knack of hitting just close enough to home for the reader that they cannot help but be drawn into the story, especially with her well-planned out use of the third person narrative.
Caroline Bond has certainly left a legacy behind her with this book.
