Caroline bond is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. I loved her previous books and this one does not disappoint.

While it is slightly more sedate in pace than previous books, it is no less heart felt and poignant.

The book follows the story of Jonathan’s three children, his partner, ex wife and carer. The books deals really well with the relationships involved. The complexity of sibling relationships and the roles we are assigned as children. It looks at if and how these can be changed.

Jonathan knows he is dying and rewrites his will to make his children decide who should benefit from his estate and how. Enough to set the car among the pigeons in any family!

How will the children deal with their step-mother and their mother? How will they decide who “deserves” what?

A powerful, yet quiet book on the complexity of family, the difficulty of death, and human relationships
