Alison lives in the Netherlands, having fled Dublin a decade ago after her boyfriend, Will, was found guilty of the murder of 5 students.
Fast forward 10 years and murders have resumed - is it a copycat killer or is Will innocent? He says that he has information but will only talk to Alison.
The book moves between the present day and the life of Alison and her friend Liz when they first start University.
Liz has a mercurial personality and whilst she's Alison's best friend she's also, at times, cruel and prone to twisting the truth.
We follow the girls drifting apart after Alison meets Will, until one fateful day when the girls have a big falling out one night and Liz is murdered before daybreak.
All the evidence points towards Will but in the present day, in the light of the new murders, a current day cop (Malone) starts to doubt the safety of the conviction.
What follows is the tale of him and Alison finding out the truth and a link between the murdered girls that hadn't been properly investigated before.
Just when you think it's all neatly sewn up there is a final twist to the tale though.
A roller coaster race against time from start to finish, a cracking read.
