Sunday and her mother Lavinia along with her husband Tom run Treetops Manor as a home for orphans. Foundlings may be nearer the mark as they keep getting babies left on the front doorstep. The youngest of these is Kitty and she is the most beautiful baby they have seen. In her childlessness Sunday tries to treat all their children the same but Kitty owns a special place in her heart. Much to the chagrin of Maggie who was the youngest until Kitty arrives and really dislikes Kitty.

More Josephine Cox than Catherine Cookson this is a tale of wealthy Victorians who seem to think that life is perfect. Maybe it is but the undercurrents of jealousy and love unrequited can destroy all that.

Not really my type of book and I found the sentimentality a little cloying in the early chapters provided here. Maybe this will improve as Kitty is taken away by her guardians who have paid so much for her keep.
