The second in the Mothering Sunday series, we visit old friends Sunday and Tom Branning who know run Treetops children’s home, giving care to young children in the hope of giving them a better start than they had in life.

It’s here that we meet Kitty (who was abandoned on Treetops’ doorstep as a newborn). Kitty is beautiful, charismatic and outgoing and is loved by all who meet her. At age 15 she is called back to London by her birth mother. But all is not as it seems...

Kitty, desperate to please her mother Ruby enters into the entertainment world of singing. But her mother has more uses for her in mind, and wants to milk as much money out of Kitty as she can without a care for her daughter’s wellbeing.

I adored this book. I love that we got to see how Sunday, Tom, Cissy and others were faring in life. Goodwin knows how to make the story authentic to the time period and really builds characters that you become invested in and care about. She also has a knack of creating characters you really dislike too!

I liked Kitty, but became frustrated with her ever growing sense of entitlement at one point. However Goodwin completely changed my view of Kitty when she came to earth with a bump. She was treated abominably by her self-centred mother Ruby and the conniving Mr Fitzhenry.

The back drop of the World War One really had me gripped. I adore any stories set in this era and this added element to the story really added a huge amount of depth.

This book can be read quite easily as a standalone book, but to really understand some of the characters it would be beneficial to read the excellent Mothering Sunday.

I cannot wait for the next instalment of this series. I would like to thank Readers First for a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
