The little gardeners' handbook by Michael Bond is a joy! The children, wildlife and even the garden gnomes are seen doing gardening throughout. The illustrator Maria Dek really has crammed the book full of happy little gardeners, and even some happy smiling plants. Whether you like birds, mammals, amphibians or bugs they are all here getting on with their busy work! Then there is a page on how to garden for all this wildlife.

It's a comprehensive guide for any beginner, which starts off with a welcome page assuring the child not to worry if they only have a small windowsill they can still take part in gardening activities. It is also inclusive by showing a wheelchair user and also a prosthetics user.

I like all the eco tips. I like how in the tools section the author suggests that we might even be able to make our own tools, how to find free seeds and use a welly or cups as containers. Great greeness! Under the heading 'sowing with the seasons' children are encouraged to return to the book through the year to see what needs to be done next, a brilliant way to keep the new hobby going.
