My immediate first impression of this book was wow! This is going to be a stunning and juicy read.
The cover sets the scene straight away of a bright candy coloured kitchen, exactly how you expect 50’s suburban America to be.
I love the multiple points of view, it gets you into the story and minds of these characters quickly. I am particularly drawn to Ruby, the ‘help’ who discovers that Joyce is missing and I want to find out more about her.
You can feel the swirling undercurrents of 50’s segregated America with the treatment of Ruby and the behaviour of the white women, her employers, all combining to create a discomforting sense that something is going to go badly wrong.
This is intriguing, disquieting and tense and I cannot wait to read the rest!
