What I liked straight away was that we got an insight into the protagonist's head, and a real feeling of place and time, with the idea of menstruating being dirty. It was very atmospheric, and I could tell that something wasn't quite right which made me want to read on.

When I realised the 'help' was a negro girl, I got a sinking feeling about where it might be headed, and the way she was treated. But I do love a novel where we have multiple points of view. Ruby seems a force to be reckoned with.

At the moment, I have no guesses - but I'm really intrigued!
