The long long afternoon is set in 1950s American suburbia where everyone knows everyone's business and everyone has a secret.
It compares greatly to Desperate housewives and I really felt the author wrote the characters well and you could very much feel the stifling nosiness of the community.
The action is fast paced enough to keep you entertained and despite switching between a few different characters, it never gets confusing. Each narrator had a distinct voice and were all pretty likeable (or like to hateable!)
The racial tensions and clear social divide between areas was well handled and a true reflection of the time.
There were quite a few references to a previous case the detective had worked on and it read like a second book in a series although I can't see that the author has released anything else. It might be just a strong back story written in which is a great thing to do as sometimes characters can feel one dimensional in some books.
A great easy read!
